Me, myself and lester.gg

If you took the effort of coming all the way here, you must be really interested in getting to know me. Thank you, mysterious visitor, for doing me the honour of having piqued your interest. Allow me to introduce myself.

Hi,

I’m Lester and I do geeky things. I work professionally in data, I volunteer in a charity, I talk and moderate in digital communities, I grind in video games and I swear I still have a social offline life. I’ve grown up with a rather broad interest in all kinds of technology related things. Which you’ll be sure to find more about here.

Why yet another blog

I’ve been blogging in some different places but I felt like I needed a place where I can just dump my thoughts whatever they might be. This is that place. You’ll find a bit of everything. Probably.

Standing on the shoulder of giants

One thing I am aware of at every step in my digital adventure is that for the greater part of the journey I have and will be standing on the shoulder of giants. For the majority of us, whether we’re bloggers, developers, YouTubers or in any other form content creators, we’ll most likely be consumers of the technical wonders others have invented. I am often awestruck by the ingenuity of the tools, platforms or frameworks people have come up with. I also realize I may overdramatize it but it motivates me to hopefully some day have created something as useful or clever a thing like some of the greatest minds have made. It may also very well never happen. But one can dream.

Attribution

And that’s why credit where credit is due, because I have gratefully used the fruits of labor of others. This blog wouldn’t exist without all the work done by the following people and/or resources:

  • Hexo - the static site generator that I used for this blog

  • Cloud / Web Technology

    • Cloudflare, Cloudflare Access and Cloudflare Pages - For hosting this site, my personal services, authentication and security layers and protecting them from DDoS attacks, for free. I might write a blog post on using entirely free cloud services to get things done at a later moment.
  • Inspirators:
Or really just people that I’ve been following either long before or just recently, but were examples and unbeknownst guidelines all the way in my attempt at blogging for the first time. I owe them a lot and highly recommend reading their works as well.

    • Daniel Jeffries - Blogger, (sci-fi) author and technology freak

Having been part of his author group and reading his articles have been one of the sources of inspiration to me to write my own stories.

    • Daniel Miessler - Security leader and writer that writes just about anything technology.

In terms of content and how to convey your message to the reader, Miessler may very well be my best example.

    • Erisa - I stumbled upon her homepage a long time ago due to Cloudflare Workers.

Her simple but somehow intriguing homepage holds some very interesting features and best of all, she shares most of it publicly on her GitHub page (see her link).

    • Peter Cotton - Senior VP & Chief Data Scientist that blogs way too much on all things data science.

He is the author of his book Micropredictions and runs a project that aims to democratize predictions based on data on microprediction.com. I’ve been reading his LinkedIn posts and his frequent blog posts on Medium. His critical but always humoristic takes are worth every minute of my reading time. That’s a lot of time to be honest, because Peter posts a lot on LinkedIn. And I mean a lot.
